Requesting information

Below are letters from  Baunach families requesting information from anyone regarding their "Baunach" connections. If you can help please contact them directly.

Also be sure so see the  Baunach surname history  page for more information.

If you have any interesting Baunach family stories or information I will post them on this website, just let me know.

I am especially looking for information relating to my Grandfather August John, (Possibly changed from "Johan Augusta"), and Great Grandfather (Sabastian Kaspar) AKA Casper Baunach age 44 at time of immigration to the US in 1907.

Sebastian's family in 1907

Wife: Eva Margerethe Maas  age 41,

Son: August John age 14

Son: Magnus  age 10

all immigrated to the US in 1907. Sebastian and August were born in Karbach Germany and resided in Souderhofen or Sunderhofen, Germany. I would like to find the Germany connection for my family. If anyone can help locate Baunach's who had relatives immigrating to the US from  Souderhofen or Sunderhofen, Germany around this time please let me know.

9/29/05    I have recently made an incredible discovery about my family.

I have been trying to discover where my family immigrated to after they arrived at New York in 1907. During a search of the 1910 census records I discovered Sabastian Kaspar and his family of four lived in Valley Washington. I nearly fell off of my chair when I learned this!  Valley, a very small town in eastern WA. by coincidence happens to be the very town we moved to in 1980  from Portland Or.   We chose this town because of it's charm and beautiful countryside. We have since moved around quite a bit but presently live only 50 miles from Valley and still have a strong connection to the tiny community. It is very likely my Grandfather attended the same small school my children later did. I don't know why my Great Grandfather decided to move to Valley after immigrating from Germany and how long they lived there but I am still amazed by this fact. I intend to research further including school and county records to glean what I can.

I have sent out requests for information to several Baunachs throughout the U.S. and a few in Germany. I have put together the start of four other Baunach family trees.   No common ancestor has emerged, as of yet, but I have discovered at least one other Baunach that may have originated from the town of Karbach (where my family came from).

Thanks to everyone who is participating in discovering the roots of Baunach!

from Judith (Judy) Baunach Mawhinney regarding her Baunach connection.  arrym@infosel.net.mx.

She would like any information you can provide regarding her relatives.

My name is Judith (Judy) Baunach Mawhinney. In January, you wrote to my brother, Bruce about your search for relatives. He recently game me the information and I have passed it on to my aunt, Ruth Baunach Garbarine to research. I thought that I would send you what I know and later obtain from my aunt further information that she has to send to you.
I would appreciate it if you would include this information in your web page. I would be most interested in going farther back and to hear from anyone who has more information. I can be reached at 1357 Lake Shore Dr., Brooklyn, Michigan, 49230 or by e-mail from May through Sept. at jmawhinney@cwix.com and the rest of the year at larrym@infosel.net.mx. Telephone from May to Sept. (517) 592 6240.

The following is the information that I have.
1. Paul Baunach 1825-1877 wed Sophia Antonia Uebeli Winkler, widow of
Joseph Alois Winkler who had 6 children. Family of Paul Baunach and Sophia
Antonia Uebeli Winkler

2. Jacob, July 22, 1859-1933 wed Fanny Ferch 1858-1889 Paulina, Oct. 16, 1860-Feb. 9, 1940 wed Elmore Pickens   Reference: Pg. 27-29 "The History of Pickens, W. Va.

"Casper Winkler and his sisters, Elizabeth, Wilamina, Mary and Caroline, and half brother Jacob Baunach traveled to Schenectady, N.Y. in the winter of 1872. They were also accompanied by Ludwig Wuchner, Meinrod Wasmer, and Edward Zimmerly (or Zimmerlin). All from Baden Germany. They met Peter Swint of Luxembourgh and Schenectady and conveyed their knowledge of The Turkey Bone region and Florence, a small settlement on the northside of Fork Ridge. Peter Swint had emigrated from Luxenbourgh with his widowed mother and twin brother in 1863 and knew English quite well when he met Casper Winkler and his friends. He led them into W. Va. in 1873 and all settled on lots in Florence. Peter Swint, Ludwig Wuchner and Meinrod Wasner did carpentry and painting. Casper Winkler, Jacob Baunach, and Edward (Paul) Zimmerlin farmed and cut timber. Ludwig Wuchner built the first frame house in the community of Turkey Bone. Paul and Sophia Baunach are buried in the cemetery on Turkey Bone Mt. at Pickens, W. Va. Jacob Baunach and Paul Zimmerlin moved on to Canton, Ohio around 1884 and started the family construction company, which was still in operation several years ago (1990. The above article was given to Ruth Baunach Garbarine by Carolyn McGrew, a direct descendent of Wilamina Winkler.)

I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has any connection with my relatives. I can be reached from May to Sept. at jmawhinney@cwix.com and the rest of the year at larrym@infosel.net.mx. Hello,
I am called STEPHANE BAUNACH , I reside near PARIS in FRANCE and I come to discover your site.Quelle surprise for me to discover that in the world , there are other persons that have the same name that mine. In FRANCE , I believe that there are only my parents , my sister and me. Our name remains for us a great mystery since my father has never known its parents. It is a "child of the war". It is born 25-11-44 to PARIS and its parents (probably illegitimate) have abandoned it. If in your research would know a person that would have stayed to PARIS to this period, this would be for us a very great joy. Please am forgiven if I make English faults , it is a language that I master again quite badly . If perchance you would have information to transmit me , I remain entirely available excepted 22-04-99 to 29-04-99 because I will be during this period to MOROCCO.
Sincere salutations from FRANCE.

from Kristina Berman regarding her Baunach connections.

If anyone has any information that would help please e-mail  michaelb@radiant.net

To my amazement I discovered the existence of other Baunachs. I was brought up in South Africa, the youngest of three girls with the understanding that this was the last of the line of Baunachs. My father immigrated to South Africa (via Denmark) just before WWII - His name was Frits Baunach. His father was Kurt Baunach and they were from Berlin. I would love to discover more information abut my family - The only surviving relative that I have is my father's sister who lives in Berlin - Her name is Hella Langheld. Can you help with any information ? I live in Vancouver, Canada.

Sincerely, Kristina Berman.

Dear Dennis - It seems so strange even to see the name Baunach written out >so often 'cause it has always been such an isolated name to me. And now >there seems to be so many - I couldn't get over the number of different >web pages. Thank you for replying to my e-mail and yes, I would like you >to enter the name on your e-mail list. I will let you know whenever I >have any further information.

from Gail,  Ohio, U.S.A.   KattywhampusLOL@aol.com

Hello ------  My name is Gail, and I live in Ohio, U.S.A.. My maiden name is Bonnough, which is the current spelling of a German surname. The name has been changed numerous times over the past hundred and some odd years.
I have copies of a Marriage Record dated 21 JAN 1843 wherein one of my great-grandfathers, a Michael Baunach, married a Helen Barbara Koenaeg, one of my great-grandmothers.
I also have copies of a marriage certificate dated 27 SEPT 1871 wherein one of my great-grandfathers married one of my great-grandmothers:  Jacob Bahnoch married Sophia Destel.

In 1814  the name  was spelled  Baunach

In 1840 Bounnough and Baunch
In 1849 there was a deed for a Michael Bownaugh

By 1850 it was spelled Bunough (Crawford County, Chatfield Township, Ohio)
             and Bunnaugh
       In 1853 it was Bounnough
In 1860 it was spelled Bounouch (Henry County, Monroe Township, Ohio)
             and Bonnaugh
In 1870 Bannach (Henry County, Monroe Township, Ohio) and Baunach
       In 1873 Bonough
and in 1890 Bonnough
and then in 1900 Bounnough and as far as I know, at least on my father's side of the family it is spelled as in 1890 : BONNOUGH ....
however we are split now on the pronunciation HAHAHA ...one side of the family pronounces it as "BAH - no" and others of my family (my father, mother, siblings, and my father's father) pronounce it as    "buh - NO" ......

I am currently working on my family's history (Bonnough-Clay lineage) and have completed as much the Clay side of the family history as I plan on doing, and have begun compiling what little information I have about the Bonnough side of the family.
I wanted to let you know I appreciate the work you have done, and hope you don't mind if I use some of your information to fill in gaps for my family's history, should I find applicable informaiton in your site.
                                         Sincerely,

from Nell Schemioneck   Brisbane, Australia   schemioneck@ezweb.com.au

I have only just started researching my mother's family. Her father was Ernest William Bannah born in 1912 in Eidsvold, Queensland, Australia. My mother has been dead for many years but family legend had it that her father's family came from Germany, had been interned during the war (not sure which one or where) and had changed their name, possibly from Bannach. I found a family tree on Rootsweb which shows a John Baumach (married to a Margaret) whose son Franz (born about 1821 in Werbach) married Juliana Margaret Spiner and came to Australia. On the family tree his name is shown as Bannah. I believe that he is my great-great grandfather. This seems to be the same family that Christelt@hotmail.com is looking for information about. It did not make sense to me that the family would have changed their name from Baumach to Bannah. Baunach to Bannah seems much more likely and I think the person who submitted the family tree to Rootsweb may have made an error. I would be ! very interested in finding out any information about my ancestors as I know nothing about my mother's family.

Thank you for your website.

From Dr. Stephan Baunach, Germany (I think)  stephanbaunach@gmx.de

Hi, my name is Dr. Stephan Baunach and I am very surprised and pleased about the work you have done to find out the roots of the world wide spread Baunach-family. My grand-grand-grand-father comes from a tiny village called kirchschoenbach - you need a very precise map of Germany to find this place. The story in our family is that in WW II one of my grandfathers uncles was a prisoner of war in a camp in the US. He was sick and remembered releatives in Cincinnati, Ohio and he got into contact with this family and got help. But this connection broke down over the years because of the language my ancestors here did not understand. Years ago I found a very old picture of the man who moved to the states (when?) showing him and his wife. This picture was taken in Cincinnati Ohio. My question is - does anybody know the connection between Kirchschoenbach/Germany or has heard about the story I wrote here? I am looking forward for your answers. stephanbaunach@gmx.de

From Michael Baunach, Pennington, NJ

Hello! My name is Michael Baunach. I am 26 and I live in Pennington, NJ which is 15 minutes southwest of Princeton, NJ. My father's family occupation has been carpentry for the last 60 years, started by my grandfather Charles F. Baunach, Sr., in Princeton in 1937 and continued by my uncle Charles Baunach, Jr., (now retired, never married, no children) and my father Gerald Baunach (I am his only son). Our family business is revered in Mercer County New Jersey area as having the best craftsmanship and highest quality work. My grandfather has just recently passed away at the age of 96. My grandmother, Bertha Hedgepeth Baunach, is now 95 (Her family is from the Virginia and North Carolina area). With the understanding that I am the last of our family line on the East Coast, I have been quite interested in completing a family tree or obtaining any information about my family. To my family's knowledge, our last name was originally "Von Baunach" and has something to do with a town in Germany called "Baunach." Our name was shortened when my great-great or just great grandfather came to America. (I am in the process of obtaining his name and that information) All of my grandfather's personal information and records are being found on a daily basis and once I can review them I will have more information. Any help that you may be able to give would be greatly appreciated. Also, in our family, we pronounce it "Bon-ick." Even though I took German for a few years and know it is pronounced just how it is spelled, "Bow-knock." Anyone else have different pronunciations?

Thank You!

bk4ai@bigpond.com (new email addrwess as of 12/22/07)

Hi Dennis
Further to my email of 12/22/2004 which you  posted on your website,  I am happy to say I have received many contacts for information about Franz and Juliana Baunach  who arrived in Australia from Germany on the "Marbs" 26 Nov 1854
I now have a new email address, and wonder if you would be kind enough to update my old email address and post my new one  on your website. It is bk4ai@bigpond.com
Warmest greetings from Australia
Aubrey Bannah

Thank you to Aubrey Bannah

H i Dennis,

Greetings. my name is Aubrey Bannah, I live on Bribie Island, in Moreton Bay, in the Pacific Ocean, east coast of  Australia.  I was delighted to learn of your site...congratulations...its fantastic.

I have been researching the Baunach family history in Australia and Germany for many years.

my German ancestor and Great Grandfather, FRANZ BAUNACH  [known In Australia as Frank Bannah] was born sixth Jan 1821 in Limbachshof, Kleinrinderfeld, Germany.  Franz married Juliana Caroli Spinner, 10 Jan 1850 at Werbach.

Copies of my "BANNAH/BAUNACH/RIES  FAMILY ANCESTRY"  research is  listed with the Genealogical Society of Queensland, Inc, also the John Oxley Library, Queensland,  and the State Library of Queensland.

Franz and Juliana migrated from Germany  26 Nov 1854 on the ship "Marbs" with 280 other people. but only 236 arrived in moreton bay  Australia on 22 March 1855, after a long, very rough, stormy trip. Typhus, cholera and measles plagued those on board the crowded ship up until the last 12 days of the voyage.  20% of those on board died, 28 of these were children...including Franz and Juliana child Paulina born 24 Aug 1854 Werbach.

Soon after their arrival in Brisbane Franz and Juliana were employed at a 281 square mile sheep station, Booubyjan station, in the south burnett area of Queensland, where Franz worked as a shepherd.  After working 16 yeays there, he moved to Eidsvold station. He died there on 27 july 1880

Franz and juliana had 8 children in Australia, including my father, PETER,who married Delia agnes McGrath.

Franz Baunach was my great Grandfather.  I am aware of more than 106 decendents in Australia of Franz Baunach.  My email is bk4ai@bigpond.com  or P.O. Box 474 Bribie Island, Australia 4507.

Mr. Baunach,

I found your Baunach web side very interesting and helpful. Thank you.

I have a bit of information for you also. My GG Grandmothers maiden name was Kunigunda Baunach b. 1 Aug 1823 in Helmstadt, Germany, d. 11 Nov 1898. This is the same town and area that Claus Mueller mentioned in his letter to you. She married Dominick A. Endres b. 24 Mar 1820 in Roden, Baveria. d. 11 Jul 1890. Their marriage took place 10 Oct 1848 in Germany. The family came to the US and is documented as follows. Sailed from Hamburg on the ship Teutonia arriving in New York 14 June 1866 at the age of 46. This is from Germans to America vol.18 pg.12. He came with wife, Kunigunde 43, Daughter Kunigunde 16, Damini 14, Franz 7, Willibald 6, and Friedr. 4.

The family settled in Chatsworth, IL, USA. Dominick is buried at Chatsworth IL Catholic Cemetery. Kunigunda is buried at Danbury, St. Patrick's Cemetery, Woodbury Co. IA. I have attached a picture of her headstone.

I do have additional information on some of their decendents. I have not been able to find any other information on Kunigunda Baunach's ancestors in Helmstadt. I do have more information on the Endres family in Roden which is very close to Helmstadt. Any information would be appreciated.

Hi Dennis,

Before I do anything else, my details as follows, my name is Carolyn Crocker, email addy is cwcarolync@qld.chariot.net.au snail mail is P.O. Box 79, South Johnstone., Qld. Aust. 4859.I'm not actually a Baunach desc, my Deuffels were on the Marbs 1855 to Ozz, with Franz & Julie Baunach, shown as Baumach on the archives. Also on board was Anton Baunach, online archives have him as PANNACHS.I don't know if Anton & Franz were related, I suspect they were a least cousins. When Anton got to Ozz he apparently went to Condamine in Qld, which is where my orphaned Deuffel kids also headed, possibly in each others company. From other postings it sounds like Franz also headed in the same direction.Anton m. Wilhelmina Grambauer /(bower).... it seems Wilhelmina was the nurse at my A. Lily Deuffel's birth & the sis in law of my A. Margaret (or Mary) Grambower (nee Brown). It's a bit of a soap opera, to say the least ! I have copied & pasted Chris, Aubrey, & Nells addies & will write privately to them.

Thanks for the site Dennis.
